05-02-2012: West Chester University Strategic Plan
To: West Chester University Club & Organizational Presidents
From: Dick Swain, Co-Chair, WCU Strategic Planning Steering Committee
Subject: Draft – West Chester University Strategic Plan
The April 30 draft of Building on Excellence, the new WCU Strategic Plan, is available for comment.
The draft was discussed at the Strategic Planning Town Hall Meeting today, and it will be discussed again at the Town Hall meeting at noon in Sykes Theatre tomorrow, May 1, 2012.A PDF copy of the April 30 Draft Strategic Plan is linked to the Strategic Planning Web page, http://www.wcupa.edu/sharedvision/strategicplanning/.
Please take the time to read the draft and send your comments to SPDRAFTCOMMENTS@wcupa.edu by the end of the day Monday, May 7.Please note: The April 30 Draft is a not the final version of the Plan. It is the President’s Cabinet revision of a draft document submitted by the Strategic Planning Steering Committee. The Strategic Planning Steering Committee has some questions about the April 30 Draft, and it also wants your comments to incorporate into the next draft. We especially want to hear comments about what you think is missing, and what should be removed. The Strategic Planning Steering Committee will be meeting on May 4 and May 11 to discuss the next draft.
The WCU Mission Statement remains the same, but there are new Vision and Values Statements.
The April 30 Draft is structured so that goals are proposed under five themes, Education for Student Success, Engagement, Sustainability, Diversity, and Enrichment. Each goal is then comprised of objectives and action/assessment statements. The implementation of the plan will take place at the action/assessment level.
The next steps in the strategic planning will be:
• Strategic Planning Steering Committee reviews the Strategic Planning Town Halls and email comments
• April 30 draft revised
• Cabinet and President review the revised plan
• The revised draft plan shared with the WCU Council of Trustees, WCU Foundation Board and other stakeholders over the summer
• Final revisions
• Presentation of the Final Revision to the President and Cabinet
• President will unveil the completed strategic plan at his welcome back address in Sept. 2012Implementation planning will continue through the end of Fall Semester 2012
• Implementation planning will be a consultative process involving appropriate existing University groups and unit strategic planning groups, etc.
• Implementation planning will include the formulation of new and revised actions and assessments
• Implementation planning will also include a process for on-going assessment and revision of the plan as appropriate
• The Strategic Planning Fiscal Subcommittee will provide an independent review the costs of objectives, actions and assessments. The Strategic Planning Steering Committee and the University need your help in devising the best strategic plan possible. Please send us your comments.

02-29-2012: Congratulations Michael Richards
Congratulations to Michael Richards, a WCU student leader, who was selected as a recipient of The Hank Nuwer Anti-Hazing Hero Award for 2011. This is a national award and he was selected for his work and dedication to bettering the Fraternal movement at WCU.
Michael Richards is a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity, and holds the position of Vice President of Scholarship on the IFC at West Chester University of PA. Michael challenged hazing in his community by questioning the pledge-education process that has been a long-standing tradition on campus. After attending UIFI in 2011, he came back to his campus with new knowledge, a change in understanding of fraternal values, and education on what acts of hazing were. He realized that this ‘pledge-education’ process that had never been questioned was actually hazing, and felt it had no place in his chapter and the community. He stood up to the hazing issues in his own chapter, and realized that what he and his chapter did before did not line up with his values now. He started out small by having conversations with his brothers, then included others in the community. Finally, his conversations moved to the Greek Life office and other administrators and involved owning up to what he had experienced in order to put an end to it. He went on to speak in front of his peers, telling his own story and challenging the room to take a stance to own up to the wrong and make it right! His nominator says that, “Michael is in the middle of a war…but wins battle after battle each day as he has the courage to say something and challenge others to stop this behavior that is wrong and not values-based.”

05-10-2011: Newman Civic Fellow Award Winner!
Michael Jendzurski, a West Chester University sophomore from Oaks, Pa., has been named one of the inaugural Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellows for his community engagement. Nationwide, only 135 student leaders received this honor.
College and university presidents from 30 states nominated the most promising student leaders who demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. Through service, research and advocacy, these Newman Civic Fellows are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves, the root causes of social issues, and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change.
An Honors College kinesiology major, Jendzurski is minoring in psychology and communication studies. Treasurer for the Honors Student Association and president-elect for 2011-2012, he earned a 2011 Honors International Research Scholarship to travel to South Africa in March, where he conducted research about the apartheid era and assisted with Cecil Begbie’s H.E.L.P. Ministries soup distribution program in Capetown.
He has also led efforts in raising funds for those afflicted with HIV-AIDS and has given presentations in South Africa on service-learning practices. Using these experiences, he will be collaborating with faculty on a manuscript dealing with “sustained international education.”
In addition to his leadership, he actively participates in countless community building and service activities such as Adopt-a-Block, Light the Night, and Hanging of the Greens.
Jendzurski also plays varsity tennis for West Chester, Ultimate Frisbee at the club level, and is active in intramural sports. In 2010, he was both WCU’s Scholar Athlete of the Year as the top academic on the tennis team and a top male athlete of the University. He volunteers his time weekly to coach the Spring-Ford High School Tennis Team.
A skilled percussionist and an accomplished pianist, Jendzurski often accompanies friends in vocal performance and played the marimba while in South Africa. Recently, he collaborated with three peers to become the campus winner in the Red Bull Tum Tum Pa World Freestyle Drumming Competition, in which competitors use only school supplies and Red Bull cans to create unique beats.
“Michael Jendzurski demonstrates a well rounded and emerging record of truly outstanding scholarship, leadership and service,” says Kevin Dean, director of the West Chester Honors College. “In many ways he has achieved more as a sophomore than many do in four years.”
“These students represent the next generation of public problem solvers and civic leaders. They serve as national examples of the role that higher education can — and does — play in building a better world,” explains Campus Compact President Maureen F. Curley.
The Newman Civic Fellows Award is named for Dr. Frank Newman, one of the founders of Campus Compact, who dedicated his life to creating opportunities for student civic learning and engagement.
Campus Compact is a national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents, representing some six million students, who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education to improve community life and to educate students for civic and social responsibility. Through the Newman Civic Fellows Awards, college and university presidents acknowledge students with the ability and motivation to create lasting change in our communities. For more information about the Newman Civic Fellows, visit www.compact.org.
